ONeill and assistant Roy Keane were sacked by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI)on Wednesday after five years in charge.The duo have guided the Republic to some brilliant highs during their time in charge, including their run to the last-16 at Euro 2016.But the teams form has plummeted in 2018. Ireland have just one victory in their last 11 matches and their 0-0 draw with Denmark was their fourth consecutive game without scoring and saw them finish last in their Nations League group.3

Former boss McCarthy, who left his role as Ipswich manager in April, is already one of the big favourites for the job.The 59-year-old was Republic of Ireland manager for six years between 1996 2002, and took the team to the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan.And Cascarino believes he would be the right choice to return to the role.I think Mick is ready for international management again, he told talkSPORT host Jim White on Wednesday.I know Mick and I think he did a really good job in 2002, I was there when he got the job.With all the issues and challenges he had to face, because when he took the job we had an old squad.3

He had to get rid of a number of older players, whether they retired or he fazed them out, and he did that brilliantly well.I think theres a lot to be said from that.I think he handles himself brilliantly well in front of the public, the media and the federation, and I think his experience of being there before is something we need quite urgently at the moment. The FAI is keen to make a swift appointment, with the draw for the Euro 2020 finals due to take place in Dublin on December 2, and, as one of the hosts, they do not want to be seen as presiding over a team in flux as Europe’s great and good arrive in the city.To that end, McCarthy, who took the Republic to the 2002 World Cup finals in the Far East during a previous spell in charge, represents an attractive proposition.He has a proven track record, already has a relationship with the FAI hierarchy and, perhaps more importantly to a governing body still paying for the redevelopment of the Aviva Stadium, is available without the need to pay compensation after leaving Ipswich in April.
